Celebrating ASOW’s Fourth Anniversary!

Today marks four years since the Afghan Social Organization for Women (ASOW) was founded. Despite the immense challenges in Afghanistan, particularly for organizations advocating for women’s rights, ASOW has achieved remarkable progress. Over these years, we have implemented numerous WFP-sponsored projects, provided cash and food assistance to tens of thousands of households across Kabul, Bamiyan, and Daikundi, and created job opportunities for hundreds of men and women. ASOW has grown stronger by building partnerships with key stakeholders, improving our financial systems, and undergoing successful external audits. In these difficult times, we remain steadfast in our mission to uplift Afghan women and ensure their place in shaping a better future. Our commitment to providing essential services and advocating for women’s rights has only strengthened. ASOW stands as one of Afghanistan’s most advanced NGOs, and we look forward to continuing this vital work in the years to come. Thank you to our dedicated team, partners, and supporters who have made this journey possible. Marzia Mohammadi, Executive Director

The International Day of Charity was established with the objective of sensitizing and mobilizing people, NGOs, and stakeholders all around the world to to help others through volunteer and philanthropic activities. The date of 5 September was chosen in order to commemorate the anniversary of the passing away of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 “for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress, which also constitute a threat to peace.” Mother Teresa, the renowned nun and missionary, was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in 1910. In 1928 she went to India, where she devoted herself to helping the destitute. In 1948 she became an Indian citizen and founded the order of Missionaries of Charity in Kolkota (Calcutta) in 1950, which became noted for its work among the poor and the dying in that city. For over 45 years she ministered to the poor, sick, orphaned and dying, while guiding the Missionaries of Charity’s expansion, first in India and then in other countries, including hospices and homes for the poorest and homeless. Mother Teresa’s work has been recognized and acclaimed throughout the world and she has received a number of awards and distinctions, including the Nobel Peace Prize. International Day of Charity!

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Charity, like the notions of volunteerism and philanthropy, provides real social bonding and contributes to the creation of inclusive and more resilient societies. Charity can alleviate the worst effects of humanitarian crises, supplement public services in health care, education, housing and child protection. It assists the advancement of culture, science, sports, and the protection of cultural and natural heritage. It also promotes the rights of the marginalized and underprivileged and spreads the message of humanity in conflict situations. Thursday is the International Day of Charity, an opportunity to honour all those who commit themselves to alleviate human suffering and help the most vulnerable.

Happy 105th Independence Day!

As we celebrate the hard-won freedom of our beloved nation, let us remember the sacrifices that paved the way for our independence. Today, we honor not only our freedom but also the incredible strength and resilience of Afghan women, who have played pivotal roles throughout our history. One such heroine is Malala of Maiwand, whose bravery in the Second Anglo-Afghan War became a symbol of resistance and determination. Her courage reminds us that the empowerment of women is not just essential for our independence but is crucial for the progress and prosperity of our nation. Let this Independence Day be a reminder that unity is our strength. Together, we must strive to build a future where every Afghan, especially our women, has the opportunity to contribute, learn, and lead. Education and the active participation of women in all sectors are the cornerstones of a thriving Afghanistan. Together, we can achieve a brighter, more prosperous future for all. Wishing everyone a day of pride, reflection, and commitment to our nation’s continued freedom and progress. Marzia MohammadiExecutive Director, ASOW
